Frequently Asked Questions
How long should a title tag be?
Google cuts titles by pixel width, not by characters. On desktop that's roughly 580 to 600 pixels, which works out to about 50 to 60 characters depending on the letters you use. Wide letters like W and M take more space than i or l, which is why this tool measures pixels.
How long should a meta description be?
Aim for about 120 to 155 characters, which is roughly 920 pixels on desktop. Phones show less, around 120 characters, so put your main point and keyword early.
Why does Google show a different title or description?
Google rewrites titles and descriptions when it thinks another version better matches the search. It's more likely when a title is too long, repeats keywords or doesn't match what the page is about. A clear, accurate title and description give you the best chance Google keeps yours.
Does it work on any page?
It works on any public page. Pages behind a login, and some sites that block automated requests, can't be fetched. For those, use the paste option: open the page, press Ctrl+U (Cmd+Option+U on a Mac) and paste the source. Pasted HTML is read in your browser and never uploaded.
Do meta descriptions affect rankings?
Not directly. Google has said meta descriptions aren't a ranking factor. They matter because they shape the snippet people read before they click, so a clear, specific description can earn more clicks from the same position.
